131-465 The 'Subaltern Studies' Reading Group

Subject Description:

In this subject we will retrace and analyse the theoretical and historiographical development of the Subaltern Studies collective by reading closely and rigorously the complete series of Subaltern Studies together with a selection of the major related monographs produced by individual members of the collective. Student will become familiar with the background to and historiographical and theoretical implications of the work of the Subaltern Studies collective; appreciate the historiographical consequences of the Subaltern Studies group's work for British imperial history, South Asian history and Marxist histories of imperialism.

Assessment:

Written work of not more than 6000 words.
