Subject Description:

This subject explores aspects of the Italian migration to Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The course examines major issues in, and the changing historiography of, Italian migration, and will focus on the study of neglected sources such as unpublished evidence to official inquiries, or migrants' letters and personal accounts. We will reflect on the nature and value of these as historical sources, and on the theoretical problems of understanding the processes of migration and settlement through such sources in the context of current discussion and debate.

Assessment:

Written work amounting to no more than 6000 words.
