131-414 Australian Sport: Makers and Readers

Subject Description:

This subject examines the changing representation of sport in twentieth century Australian cultural life and in particular the shaping of Australian sporting culture by the media and its reception by spectators and participants. Students will be expected to demonstrate an awareness of the major interpretations of the significance of sport in Australian cultural life and of the theoretical and value assumptions on which these are based; display the ability to analyse and use for research a variety of sources, including the print and non-print media, memoirs, oral history, ethnographic studies and literature; utilise these skills in defining and researching a topic.

Assessment:

Written work not exceeding 6000 words.
