Subject Description:

The subject examines modern Italian history between Garibaldi's landing in Sicily in 1860 and the disgrace of Giulio Andreotti in 1995. It focuses upon four overlapping themes: Unification, Fascism, the Mafia, and the 'Problem of the South'. Five novels will be studied which highlight these themes: Tomasi di Lampedusa's The Leopard (1958), Ignazio Silone's Fontamara (1933), Carlo Levi's Christ Stopped at Eboli (1945), and Leonardo Sciascia's The Day of the Owl (1961) and To Each His Own (1966).

Assessment:

Two essays, one of 2000 words (40%), the other of 3000 words (60%).
