131-274/374 Sex and Love in the Medieval World

Subject Description:

This subject explores the importance of the writing of pagan texts and those of the Patristic Fathers, and later medieval writers, on the construction of men and women, including the sexual notions implicit in medieval texts, and the writings of the Old and New Testament. It looks at what effect the development of chivalry and courtly love may have had on the roles of women and men. It discusses gender roles and what effect they had on both work and power in the medieval period. Our primary purpose is to understand what people in this period conceived of as the proper place of men and women in their society.

Assessment:

Tutorial participation and written work of no more than 5000 words.
