Subject Description: | This subject will examine the geography, society and history of the Mediterranean region, especially Spain, Italy and Greece, over the last 100 years. Students should be able to demonstrate a familiarity with the continuities and discontinuities in the history of the region in recent times; show an awareness of the main concepts employed by scholars in the field e. g, family, village and town, honour and shame, patrons and clients, migration, religions, centre and periphery, tourism; demonstrate a knowledge of the major political developments in the region since the late nineteenth century; and be aware of the place of the Mediterranean in the European and world imagination. | |
Assessment: | One essay of 2500 words (50%), one essay of 1500 words (30%), one class paper (20%). | |
