131-259/359 The Migrant Experience

Subject Description:

A study of the great European and Asian migrations to the United States and to Australia in the later nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The subject seeks to develop an understanding of the causes and character of major migrations, of host society responses, and of the leaving, arriving and settling experiences of migrants, comparing the United States and the Australian experience. On completion of this subject students should be able to present a comparative outline of migration and settlement in the United States and Australia in this period, be familiar with major concepts and issues in migration, and with the changing historiography of migration history.

Assessment:

Written work in the form of essays and class papers up to 5000 words.
