Subject Description: | This subject examines the nature and development of Russian Society before the October Revolution, in particular the social, economic and political history of that society. On completion of this subject the student should understand the origins of the Russian state and the nature of Tsarist authority; have an appreciation of the various attempts to reform the system and the difficulties these encountered; appreciate the forces leading to revolution and why the revolution took the form that it did. | |
Assessment: | An 500-word class paper; a 2500-word research essay; at the end of the subject either a 2000-word review essay or a 2-hour examination. | |
