131-247/347 Women and Men in Medieval Monasticism

Subject Description:

This subject focuses on the development of monasticism from its beginnings in the desert, through the influential Benedictine Order, to the innovative orders of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries: the Franciscans, the Dominicans, and the 'fighting monks' the Military Orders. We explore the contribution of outstanding men and women in this area, the immense contribution they made to medieval society, and the nature of the power they wielded. Through the texts they themselves wrote, we look at the medieval world through their eyes.

Assessment:

Tutorial participation and written work of no more than 5000 words.
