Subject Description: | This subject examines the history of Japan's relations with other countries, with a particular focus on placing Japan in the Asia-Pacific Region. Japan's international relationships will be looked at in the context of competing constructions of 'Japaneseness' through its development as an Imperial power from the 1870s to the 1940s. Japan's place in the post-war world will be considered from the perspectives of postcolonial theory and recent work on gender and international relations. | |
