Subject Description:

A series of weekly two-hour lectures and one-hour tutorials studying Australians' experiences of war, both as combatants and civilians, during and after wars, since the end of the Great War of 1914-1918. Topics will include the aftermath of the Great War, World War II, and the conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. The subject explores battle and home front experiences and their interaction, the growth and nature of an Australian war tradition, the long-term impact of war upon social relations, notions of national identity, and ideas of Australia's place in the world, the course of the Anzac legend, and critical responses to the Anzac legend in the context of Australian traditions of myth-making and dissent.
