Subject Description: | A study of the ways in which Europeans attempted to consolidate their control over cultural, economic and political life throughout large parts of the globe, against the background of war, revolution and mental transformations in pre-industrial Europe; and the role of European notions of civilised society in the formation of early European colonial empires. Students who complete this subject should: understand the development of key cultural ideas in European history such as 'civilisation' and how they underpin European domination in this period; be familiar with some examples of early European colonisation; locate and analyse literary and visual documents which are critical to these historical developments. | |
Assessment: | One research essay of 2500 words (50%), one review essay of 1500 words (40%) and tutorial participation (10%). | |
