Subject Description:

Through analysis of contemporary documents and a wide variety of secondary sources (the writings of modern historians), we look at the major changes which took place in Western Europe between 300 AD and 1066 AD. We focus on the life of ordinary people, clerics and nobles, the marriage of Roman and Germanic institutions which form the background of Early Modern Europe, and the nature and importance of early medieval institutions. Tutorials (small group teaching) permit students to learn to argue productively and to ask questions they may have after attending lectures or doing the prescribed reading. Our goal is that students will not just 'learn' History, but instead learn to 'make' History themselves.

Assessment:

Tutorial participation and written work of not more than 4000 words.

Prescribed Texts:

Source Documents and Readings ed. A Gilmour-Bryson, History Dept.
