126-335/435 The Russian Novel and Criticism

Objectives:

By the end of the subject students should be able to:

  • understand the development of the genre in Russian literature;

  • demonstrate a close understanding of one or two selected authors.

Content:

The development of the novel in the 19th and 20th centuries. Special attention will be given to one major work by each of Lermontov, Gogol, Tolstoy, Dostoevsky and Bulgakov, along with a significant critical article on each.

Assessment:

By essays and class paper totalling up to 5000 words (3rd year), 6000 words (4th year).
