126-271/371 Viking Language, Literature and Culture (Part B)

Prerequisite/s:

A pass in 126-270/370 or an equivalent subject.

Contact:

Three hours a week: a language class, a lecture and a seminar.

Objectives:

On completion of this subjects students will:

  • have consolidated and extended knowledge of the Old Norse language;

  • have developed reading skills in Old Norse so that they can read Old Norse texts with the aid of a dictionary;

  • be able to read a short saga in Old Norse (Hakonar saga gó da);

  • be able to survey Old Norse literature, with a concentration on five sagas in English translation;

  • be introduced to the mythology of Ancient Scandinavia.

Content:

An introduction to the Old Norse language and a survey of the history and culture of the Viking Era (c. 800-1050 AD).

Assessment:

Weekly assignments in the language; a 1-hour test in September and a 3-hour examination at the end of semester.
