Objectives:

By the end of the subject students should be able to:

  • demonstrate a very solid control of the basic grammatical system, and at least passive knowledge of such finer points as occur in the textbook;

  • demonstrate a fairly large active and passive vocabulary, sufficient for the following;

  • translate medium-difficulty texts (R-E) without a dictionary and difficult ones with a dictionary;

  • write and converse in Russian on relatively serious topics (e. g. social or political issues);

  • understand normal spoken Russian texts (e. g. lecture, broadcast talk) on any general topic;

  • demonstrate an understanding of the content and literary structure of selected literary texts (by commenting and translating).

Content:

Advanced grammar. Translation in both directions. Composition. Close study of literary texts.

Assessment:

A 2-hour test on each of the language and literature parts; a 20-minute oral exam; assignments totalling up to 2000 words.
