126-114 Russian Literature and Society A

Objectives:

By the end of the subject, students should be able to demonstrate:

  • a thorough understanding of the cultural development of Russia during the period covered;

  • the ability to form critical opinions regarding the significance and value of Russian texts in a national and global context, to discuss these in a scholarly way and to communicate their knowledge to the surrounding community.

Content:

Major works of Russian literature in English, in the context of Russian society 988-1855.

Assessment:

A total of 4000 words (which may include essay, tutorial paper and exam).

  • Gogol, The Overcoat in Diary of a Madman and Other Stories, Penguin.
  • Turgenev, On the Eve, Penguin.
  • Goncharov, Oblomov, any edition.
  • Lermontov, A Hero of our Time, Penguin.
  • Pushkin, The Queen of Spades and other stories
  • Turgenev, Fathers and Sons, Penguin.
