Five classes and a laboratory session a week

Objectives:

By the end of the subject, students should be able to:

  • demonstrate control of the basic grammatical system of Russian;

  • translate basic texts from Russian into English and vice versa;

  • demonstrate an active knowledge of around 1200 words and a passive knowledge of a further 1000 words (all from the textbook);

  • conduct conversation on a limited number of basic topics (e. g. family, weather, travel, studies).

Content:

A post-beginners subject covering all areas of the language but concentrating on the grammatical structure.

Assessment:

Class work, both oral and written, and regular assignments are taken into account; a 1-hour paper and 15-minute oral exam in mid-semester, and a 2-hour paper and 15 min. oral at the end of the semester.
