126-107 German Literature and Society 1871-1933

A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar a week

Objectives:

At the conclusion of the subject, students will have:

  • an understanding of the major political periods of Germany in the 20th century and of their cultural, intellectual and social framework;

  • studied some significant 20th-century German literary works with particular reference to them as documents of, and statements about, their period;

  • encountered different interpretative approaches to 20th century German literature.

Content:

Major 20th century German literary works by Kafka, Hesse, T. Mann and others in their cultural and political context. No knowledge of German required.

Assessment:

A 3000-word essay and an additional class paper for second-year students.
