A two hour seminar each week and attendance at departmental research seminars

Objectives:

After completing this subject, the student should have:

  • an understanding of the nature of science (including Geography);

  • developed an understanding of major conceptual debates in contemporary human and physical geography, and their implications for research methodology;

  • gained awareness of selected philosophical traditions in the discipline, and their theoretical and empirical manifestation in contemporary geography.

Content:

Geography as a science; philosophical issues in geographic research. Seminars on contemporary research in Geography.

Assessment:

Essays and seminar papers totalling 6000 words.
