121-378 Research Project in Geography and Environmental Studies (Advanced)

Prerequisite/s:

An advanced level of achievement in at least 33 points of Geography or Environmental Studies at second or third year level. Students wishing to enrol must obtain written permission from the Head of Department.

Timetable:

Semester 1, repeated 2

Contact:

Up to one hour per week; an additional minimum of 65 hours of research and writing during the semester

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should:

  • have a thorough understanding of a particular geographical or environmental issue and how it relates to the broader perspective of the relevant discipline;

  • know how to research and evaluate a wide range of literature sources for information on the chosen topic;

  • be able to design, carry out and prepare a report which may involve the collection of some primary data;

  • have gained skills in the oral presentation of information and ideas to a small audience.

Content:

A special study based on an area of interest arising from one or more of the departmental subjects taken by the student previously or concurrently.

Assessment:

Preparatory essay, 1500 words; study report, 3500 words. Weighting of assessment items will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
