121-235/335 Emergence of East Asia

Completion of 25 points of first year Geography or Economics or Asian Studies or Sociology. 121-218/318 Australia and the Pacific Rim is recommended.

Three hours per week of lectures and tutorials

Objectives:

At the end of this subject students should:

  • have a knowledge of the socio-economic changes induced by the development paths of East Asian countries since world war 2;

  • be able to understand the development history and recent industrial restructuring of these countries in the changes that have taken place in global capitalist production and the Pacific Rim regional economy;

  • be capable of assessing the roles of resources, markets, institutions, labour processes and the state in the development and restructuring of these countries;

  • in light of this learning, be able to assess the main development theories.

Content:

Changes in the value, distribution and organisation of production in selected east Asian countries. Social processes of economic, institutional, political organisation and labour processes of these countries. Development theories.

Assessment:

An examination of up to 2 hours; an essay paper of up to 4000 words. Proportions to be advised.
