121-231/331 Statistical Methods in the Social Sciences

Note:

Students in Geography should note that, in addition to the units listed here, the Departments of Criminology, Political Science and Psychology offer third and fourth year subjects about social science and policy research methods. These would be very helpful to them within geography and in employment. Students intending to proceed to honours in geography should not do this subject. Students cannot receive credit for both this subject and 121-342 Research Design in Geography and Environmental Studies due to overlap in subject content.

Prerequisite/s:

103-230/330 Microcomputer Applications for Arts Students.

Contact:

Two 1-hour lectures and a 3-hour practical class a week.

Content:

Statistical methods for the social sciences using microcomputer statistics software. Sampling, parametric and non-parametric procedures. Emphasis on practical procedures and interpretation.

Assessment:

One 1.5 hour final examination (25%), weekly practical class reports (50%) and a research project of up to 3000 words (25%). Students are required to pass both the practical and examination components of the subject and to complete the research project.
