Objectives:

To develop an understanding of the basic principles of environmental management and the process of environmental conflict. At the end of this subject students should:

• be able to discern the ecological, economic and political issues at stake in real issues of environmental conflict;

• have some familiarity with laws and institutions (from the local to the international scale) that affect environmental management;

• have gained skills in analysing the relations between interest groups, organisations and the state that affect environmental management;

• have an introductory knowledge of the principles of environmental economics and sustainable development;

• know some of the theoretical solutions to environmental problems and understand the difficulties in applying these principles.

Content:

Case studies of environmental issues and the conflicting parties involved. Environmental degradation and concepts of rational environmental management. Economic functions of the environment. Environmental valuation. Sustainable development and growth, population and equity. Environmental conflict 'mapping' and conflict resolution. Internationalisation of environmental conflict.
