121-171 Environmental Change: an Introduction to Environmental Studies

Two 1-hour lectures and one 2-hour laboratory each week, plus up to 2 days field work

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • understand the complex interdependence between the environment and human activity;

  • be familiar with the physical, social and political aspects of major environmental problems;

  • be familiar with basic concepts in Physical and Human Geography;

  • have acquired a number of technical skills used in Physical Geography and Environmental Studies.

Content:

Environmental variability in space and time. Human responses to, and impact on, the physical landscape. An introduction to topics in Environmental Studies, such as land degradation, global warming and social perceptions of environmental change. Development of basic skills in the analysis and interpretation of primary data, such as remote sensing.

Assessment:

Up to 2000 words of written work, including assignments, field report and continuously assessed practical work; plus a 2-hour end-of-semester examination. Weighting of assessment items will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
