116-461 French Part 4: Advanced Spoken and Written Language

Content:

Various activities and exercises are intended to foster linguistic competence in the following areas: oral-aural communication skills required in normal and professional life, in particular for oral presentations (exposés, interviews, debates, etc.) by learning appropriate strategies and operating at various levels of formality; pronunciation, in particular acquisition of native-like patterns of delivery; ability to write and translate (French-English; English-French) texts of various length, in different registers (in particular French academic writing); mastery of a wide range of vocabulary (general and speaking) related to the themes and genres studied in class; ability to analyse, discuss and use complex grammatical and discourse structures at sentence and text level.

Assessment:

Two 90-minute end of semester tests (40 %); written and oral practical exercises (35 %); one 30-minute oral test (25 %).

Prescribed Texts:

A collection of texts and exercises will be provided by the Department.
