Semester 2

Objectives:

Students who complete this subject should:

  • be able to analyse sophisticated literary texts with an appropriate range of critical tools;

  • demonstrate an awareness of the transformation processes whereby literary texts assume an independence and validity in the different genre of cinema.

Content:

The starting point of the course is provided by late nineteenth-century realism or 'verismo' as illustrated in Verga's I Malavoglia. The post-World War II texts will be examined in the light of neo-realism (verismo's modern development), both in terms of their adherence to its tenets and their departure from them. The course will also give emphasis to historically significant periods such as the Risorgimento and Fascism. The cinematographic component of the course will consider the films as independent works of art, but will also consider the question of their relationship to the original literary work which inspired them.

Assessment:

One class paper; one 3000-word essay for third year students; one 4000-word essay for fourth year students.

Prescribed Texts:

  • G. Verga, I Malavoglia, any edition.
  • G. Tomasi di Lampedusa, Il Gattopardo, Feltrinelli.
  • G. Bassani, Il giardino dei Finzi-Contini, any edition.
