116-365/465 The Sicilian Connection

Prerequisite/s:

Two sequential second-year Italian subjects (33.3 credit points) (3rd year) or admission to Italian Honours school (4th year).

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should have acquired:

  • an understanding of the role played by the historical novel in early nineteenth-century Italian literature;

  • a detailed knowledge of the more significant texts both as para-historical documents and as literary artifacts, with special attention paid to various relationships such as, for example, fact versus fiction, and realism versus imagination.

Content:

The subject will examine in detail the principal works of three post-World War II Sicilian writers, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Sciascia, and Consolo, paying particular attention in all instances to their reliability as chroniclers of the past, their relevance as such for the historical reality of the times in which they themselves lived, and their concern as writers with the imaginative transformation of their material.

Assessment:

Written assignments totalling not more than 5000 words (3rd year) / 6000 words (4th year).
