116-243/343 The Word and the Image: Art, Music, Literature and Society in 19th and 20th Centuries France

Three one-hour lectures/seminars a week.

Content:

This subject will trace the development of the main literary and artistic movements in France from 1830 to the Post World War I years. The movements to be studied are Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Dada and Surrealism. Emphasis will be placed on the way literature, art and music interacted to produce a specific artistic climate. The lectures will be predominantly in French.

Assessment:

One 2500 word essay (in English) (40 %), one 500 word résumé of essay (in French) (10 %), one 20 minute oral presentation (in French) (25 %), one slide test (25 %).
