116-242/342 The Rise of the Individual: Art and Literature in France and Italy From 1820 To 1930

Prerequisite/s:

A pass in Post-VCE first-year subjects or a pass in elementary stream second-year subjects in the French Section or in the Italian Section.

Three one-hour lectures or seminars a week.

Content:

The subject traces the theme of crises in the individual and in society in 19th and early 20th century literature and art in Italy and France. Emphasis will be placed on the influence of one culture on another and on how each society interpreted the movements of Romanticism, Realism and Surrealism.

Assessment:

Written assignment of 3000 words (English) (50 %); 1 x 500 word résumé in French/Italian (10 %); 1 x 10 minute oral in French/Italian (20 %); 1 x 20 minute class presentation in French/Italian (20 %).
