116-222/322 Poetics and Poetry

Two one-hour lectures and one one-hour tutorial a week

Content:

The major part of this subject will be concerned with the understanding of poems by some of outstanding figures in French poetry from the 16th century to the 20th century such as Ronsard, Nerval, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Eluard. The examination of theoretical concepts will always be related to and illustrated by the study of poetic texts.

Assessment:

One class paper (2000 words) (40 %); one essay (3000 words) in French (60 %).

Prescribed Texts:

A selection from collected works (ed. La Pleiade or Garnier) from Ronsard, Nerval, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Apollinaire, Eluard, Breton.
