116-221/321 Performing the Text: Tragedy and Comedy in French Theatre

Three hours a week (lecture and tutorial)

Content:

A selection of plays from the 17th to the 20th centuries. Tragedy and its later metamorphosis into the drama will be explored through works by Corneille, Hugo, Anouilh and Beckett. The comic theatre will be explored through works by Molière and Marivaux. Each play is analysed from both a textual and performance standpoint, using recent videotaped productions by the Comédie Française.

Assessment:

One class paper (2000 words) (40 %); one essay (3000 words) in French (50 %) and tutorial participation (10%).
