Subject Description:

This subject deals with a selection of methodological issues appropriate to fourth year and higher degree study in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art.The subject is designed to complement thesis research, and the selection of topics and focus will vary from year to year according to student's interests. Some topics are designed as an introduction to practical issues in doing advanced art historical research; others focus on theoretical issues.Topics may include: introduction to palaeography and archival work overseas; the nature of art historical publishing; the exhibition catalogue as a field of art historical research; electronic publishing; computer software and digital imaging for advanced art historical study; the implications for art history of the scientific analysis of paintings; artists' biographies and their interpretation; art history & literary criticism; iconography and iconology; art history and cultural history; post-structuralist approaches to art history; theories and methods of connoisseurship; mechanisms of stylistic change in art, craft, and fashion.
