Subject Description:

This subject provides an outline of the history of prints from the Fifteenth to the Nineteenth centuries. The early evolution of prints in Germany and Italy and the artists involved (including Albrecht Dürer and Marcantonio Raimondi) and the artists who took up and developed their methods (such as Rembrandt) are studied in detail. The work of a range of 17th - 19th century printmakers is examined, including some of the following: Jacques Callot, Salvator Rosa, Wenceslaus Hollar, William Hogarth, Antonio Canaletto, G.B. Piranesi, G.B. Tiepolo, William Blake, Charles Meryon and J.A. McNeil Whistler. Close attention is paid to techniques of printmaking. Some classes are held in the Print Room of the Baillieu Library.
