Subject Description: | This course will involve an in-depth study of the science fiction and horror genres in film and television, with some focus also given to computer games. Students will be expected to constructively and critically apply a variety of theoretical approaches to the analysis of the films and television programmes. Emphasis will be placed on the recurring patterns and themes to be found in these two intersecting genres. Defining characteristics and thematics of a variety of sub-genres of science fiction and horror will be explored and emphasis will be placed on a close analysis of numerous examples, such as: space frontier shows (the Star Trek series, Earth 2, Babylon V, Lost in Space); the 'the search for the existence of alien life forms and other "strange phenomena"' shows (X-files, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Night Stalker). | |
Assessment: | Written work which may comprise class papers, essays or take-home examinations totalling about 6000 words. | |
