Subject Description:

This subject deals with art and architecture in Rome and Venice in the eighteenth century. It aims to provide a broad picture of the artistic culture of the period and its social context. Particular emphasis is placed on the use of primary source material, on the history of collections formed during this period, especially those in English Country House, and on works in the National Gallery of Victoria. Some of the following themes and artists will be considered: Giambattista Tiepolo; Piranesi; Mengs; Batoni; antiquarianism in Rome; the French Academy in Rome and the Accademia di San Luca; the Grand Tour; English Country House Collections; the emergence of Neoclassicism; and Papal patronage.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, exercises, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5000 words.
