111-330/430 Orientalism in Visual Culture: A Colonising Gaze

Subject Description:

The subject studies European constructions of the East (North Africa to India) in painting, photography, travel writing, architecture, and universal exhibitions. Artists studied include Delacroix, Gérôme, Loti, Matisse, Indian and Algerian painters. Critiques of Orientalism, cross-cultural reading (e.g. Japonisme), and colonial history are considered from a post-colonial perspective.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5000 words for 3rd year and 6000 words for 4th year.
