111-311 The Connoisseurship of Italian Landscape Painting and Drawing

Subject Description:

This subject develops skills in practical connoisseurship. Connoisseurship is the task of discriminating between works of art primarily by means of their visual properties. The primary emphasis of the subject is visual, and seminars are therefore mainly devoted to discussing particular problem areas in the connoisseurship of Italian landscape painting and drawing in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Also addressed are the nature and use of the primary sources, artists biographies, inventories, sale catalogues and the art market. Artists considered include Patinir, Polidoro da Caravaggio, Carracci, Elsheimer, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Salvator Rosa, Canaletto, and Corot.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays, visual tests or take-home examinations totalling about 5000 words.
