Subject Description:

This subject will analyse and compare the representation of women and the role of the female spectator in classic and contemporary Hollywood, European and feminist cinemas. Major theories employed will include psychoanalysis, semiotics and sociology. Topics to be studied will include the operation of patriarchy, sexual difference, desire and the gaze.

Assessment:

Written work which may comprise class papers, essays or take-home examinations totalling about 5000 words.
