Subject Description: | A study of television in its multiple dimensions - aesthetic, social, cultural and institutional. Various theoretical perspectives, such as modernist and postmodernist theories of the relationship between society and the media, are examined for their relevance to the study of television. Although the focus is on Australian television, the influence of British and American models in the formative years will be examined. The recent trend towards globalisation in the electronic media will also be related to contemporary Australian television programming and advertising. A comparison of television and cinematic codes foregrounds the similarities and differences between the two media, and categories of film criticism and theory such as narrative, realism and genre are investigated in terms of their applicability to television. Other topics for study may include pay television, audience reception studies, the televisual aesthetic of flow and segmentation and public access television.
Assessment: | Written work which may comprise class papers, essays or take-home examinations totalling about 5000 words.
