111-205/305 High Renaissance and Mannerist Art: The Age of Michelangelo and Titian

Subject Description:

This subject deals with art and architecture in Italy, especially Rome and Venice. Among the artists and architects considered are: Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, Giorgione, Titian, Correggio, Parmigianino, Pontormo, Rosso, Vasari, Cellini, Tintoretto, Veronese, Bramante, Giulio Romano, and Palladio. Particular emphasis is placed on the working methods of sixteenth artists; style; iconography and allegory; the concept of mannerism; aesthetic ideals; the social and political function of works of art; art and the Counter-Reformation; art and architectural theory; and palace, church and villa architecture.

Assessment:

A bibliographic exercise of 500 words, a visual test of 2 hours (2000 words), and an essay of 2500 words.
