Subject Description: | This subject looks at both the history of popular media forms and how the popular media has been theorised and valued in the 20th century. Central to this subject is an examination of the history of the changing forms and sites of popular media spectacles, from early cinema through to new media technologies, from spirit photography to the computer generated image. Focusing on the development of film and photography in modernity and placing these cultural technologies in the context of the city crowd and commodity culture, students will examine the relationships between culture, technology, and aesthetic form by looking at specific case studies. | |
