106-224/324 Introductory Old English Language and Literature

Subject Description:

This subject is an introduction to the language and literature of the Anglo-Saxons from 750 to 1150, focusing on both prose and poetry, read in the original. Students who complete this subject successfully will have acquired a basic knowledge of the English language in its earliest form; will be familiar with the major cultural and linguistic impulses that have shaped English over the past 1000 years; will have studied the basic principles of oral-formulaic theory and have an understanding of the impact of the written work on an oral culture; and will be equipped to undertake more advanced research in this and related areas of literary studies and language acquisition.

Assessment:

Written work of not more than 5000 words.
