106-109 Traditions of Shakespeare

Subject Description:

This subject provides two main contexts for a study of Shakespeare: first, the dramatic traditions and theatrical practices that produced Shakespeare as an Elizabethan dramatist; and second, the literary and cultural traditions that his work inaugurated in subsequent centuries and in different national and political formations. Students who successfully complete this subject will have a close understanding of selected plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries and of some literary rewritings of them. They will also have a background of relevant knowledge and methodologies on which to base further studies in English and Cultural Studies.

Assessment:

Written work of not more than 4000 words.
