104-248/348 Mesopotamian Mythology, Religion and Literature

Prerequisite/s:

Any two Arts subjects or permission of the Head of the Department. This subject does not presuppose knowledge of, or expertise in, the Semitic languages.

Two lectures and a tutorial a week.

Subject Description:

The history, literature and thought of the Ancient Near East, principally the Mesopotamian tradition; Sumerian mythology, Babylonian mythology, scientific works and profane literature. Students on completion of the subject should have acquired an initial understanding of the ancient Mesopotamian conception of the universe and humanity's place in it, and have acquired a broad knowledge of the main aspects of intellectual life in ancient Mesopotamia.

Assessment:

3000 words of written work (50%) and a 2-hour examination (50%).
