104-243/343 The History and Archaeology of Hellenistic Palestine

Subject Description:

The subject deals with archaeological method and specific outcomes of archaeological practice within the context of the history of Palestine within the range of years 300 BCE to 135 CE. Students on completion of the subject should be able to: discuss intelligently the results of archaeological work in Hellenistic Palestine, from historical and methodological points of view; Reflect on the 'clash of cultures' motif especially as it applies to Hellenism and Judaism; Articulate the importance of Hellenisation for the processes which produced Rabbinic Judaism and early Christianity.

Assessment:

Essay: one 3000 word essay (30%), Tutorial: one 1000 word paper [assessed together with the tutorial presentation] (20%), Examination: one one-hour test during the semester (50%).
