104-136 Empires of the Ancient World

None, though any classics or archaeology first-year first semester subject is recommended.

Two lectures and a tutorial a week

Subject Description:

Students on completion of this subject should be able to: recognise an empire when they see one, and apply a standard set of criteria to the analysis of that empire; criticise these criteria from the perspective of their overall adequacy and their particular relevance to any exercise; recognise parallels with contemporary situations, and be able to reflect on the relevance for these of an understanding of ancient world contexts. A basic set of criteria for analysis will be applied to four empires selected from a long list.

Assessment:

Essay: one 2000 word essay (30%), Tutorial: one 1000 word paper [assessed together with the tutorial presentation] (20%) and Examination: one 1-hour paper during the semester (50%).

Prescribed Texts:

The department will issue a reading guide.
