103-203/303 Using Computers in Research

Prerequisite/s:

Successful completion of 103-230/330 Microcomputer Applications for Arts Students or 104-399 Scientific Techniques and Computer Applications in Archaeology.

One one hour lecture and one two hour laboratory session per week

Objectives:

Students completing this subject should:

  • gain an understanding of how to access and retrieve information from the Internet;

  • be familiar with the various resources available on the Internet in at least one of their chosen focus areas;

  • gain experience in the use of electronic mail, and participating in discussion groups;

  • acquire basic skills in the use of software designed specifically for use in qualitative research and to demonstrate the application of these skills in one of their chosen focus areas;

  • acquire advanced skills in the use of common application software for the manipulation and display of data relevant to one of their chosen areas of focus;

  • have an awareness of the methodological implications of techniques used in the conduct of research.

Content:

The subject will familiarise students with accessing and acquiring information from the various types of resources available on computers, both local and international, that are attached to the Internet. It will also included advanced techniques for the manipulation and display of data using common application software and basic techniques using special purpose qualitative research software.

Assessment:

Two computer-based research projects (1005) totalling not more than 5000 words.
