705-412 Geographic Information Systems for Planning and Management B

Subject Description:

The ability of vector-based GIS to analyse and manage spatial data is explored using applications to urban and regional planning and management of resources and services. GIS development is introduced using industry-standard software and a real-world problem. Spatial analysis and modelling techniques are explored to demonstrate the applications of GIS in a variety of areas including parcel-based land information system and network-based information system. Integration of raster and vector GIS is introduced to enhance the analytical capability of the spatial information system. Finally, the concept of an integrated GIS is introduced as a decision support tool for the urban local Government.

Assessment:

A series of weekly problems worth 60% of the grade and a final project of 3000-5000 words.
