702-411 Advanced Construction

Two hours of lectures and up to two hours of drawing office/laboratory/tutorial a week

Subject Description:

Industrialised Buildings: the context for the development of industrialised building; Building Rehabilitation: the economics of building rehabilitation; the practice of building rehabilitation and its technical considerations; traditional trade skills and modern standards; methods of investigative techniques. Repair and protection of concrete structures. Modern glazing methods and equipment. Advanced Structures: the development, form and structural behaviour of spatial structures; prefabrication including precast concrete practice; the building facade, architectural, performance and construction aspects, the behaviour, construction and elementary design of long span structures such as space frames, suspended cable, membrane and pneumatic structures. Elementary feasibility studies of existing or proposed buildings taking into account economic, structural, constructional and other technical considerations.

Note: Students may not be exposed to all of the content. The content for any particular year is taken form a larger list.

Assessment:

One 2-hour examination. Written and drawn assignments equivalent to not more than 5000 words.
